A Look Back at the Audi A3's History
The Audi A3 was first introduced in 1996 as a sporty, compact sedan. The A3 was the first Volkswagen-manufactured car to feature a quattro all-wheel drive system, and it quickly became a favourite among drivers for its reliability and performance. The A3 has since seen several generations, each offering slight improvements that make it an even more attractive choice for car buyers.
First generation Audi A3: 1996 – 2003
It didn’t take long for the A3 to establish itself as a highly desirable vehicle, based on the same platform as the Mk4 Volkswagen Golf that arrived later in the year. It was originally only available as a 3-door hatchback with the 5 door and the S3 joining it in 1999.
Second generation Audi A3: 2003 – 2013
Bringing with it a brand-new look, some additional variants and a new name, the Sportback, which is still part of the range as we know it today. Like with the first generation the second generation A3 was launched as a 3-door version, with the 5-door joining a year later, and the first A3 cabriolet in 2008.
The S3 also returned for the second generation and was joined by the fastest and sportiest A3 to date, the RS3, powered by the legendary quattro all-wheel drive system.
Third generation Audi A3: 2013 – 2019
Launched for the first time with both 3 and 5 door variants plus a saloon bodystyle available giving the most options from the range to date. The S3 and RS3 returned with updated powertrains and spec plus the saloon bodystyle on both models and the S3 getting the cabriolet bodystyle for the first time.
Fourth generation Audi A3: 2020 – Present
With buying habits changing Audi discontinued the 3-door variant of the A3 and launched the fourth generation with just the 5 door Sportback, shortly followed by the Saloon.
With this generation the A3 became fully digital with 10.25-inch virtual cockpits as standard across the range and 10.1-inch infotainment displays.
