History of the Hatchback
The first hatchback vehicle was manufactured in 1938, with a two-piece tailgate. It wasn’t until after WWII that the design changed to a one-piece tailgate, with a hatchback that attached to the roof of the car, much like today’s designs. Today, nearly every car manufacturer on the market has its own hatchback design, making it easy for you to find the right model to fit your needs.
The body style of the hatchback has changed over the years and continues to evolve based on the car manufacturer. The typical style is a type of a saloon with a more squared-off roof. The shape of the roof makes it easy for a hatch to attach to the back of it that can be lifted. This takes the place of a standard boot.
Some manufacturers, such as Kia and Audi, have created hatchbacks that actually look more like elongated sedans than traditional hatchback body styles. But, they still feature the hatch at the back of the car, which gives them far more storage space than a traditional sedan with a small boot.
Advantages and disadvantages of choosing a used hatchback
Because hatchback cars come in a variety of different styles and sizes, there is likely a model that will fit just about anyone’s needs. What are the disadvantages of a hatchback?
- Can use more energy than a standard saloon
- May be a target for thieves if they can see your belongings in the boot (but most come with parcel shelves)
Is a hatchback the right car for you?
The great thing about hatchbacks is their versatility and variety, whether you’re looking for a smaller car, for nipping around town, or a more spacious family car, there are hatchback’s on the market to suit.
As well as a wide range of sizes, hatchbacks really stand out from other body types because of their boot. Unlike a saloon, the hatchback boot is part of the main cabin and is wide opening, opening with the rear windscreen as one unit. The design of the boot on a hatchback makes it brilliant for fitting larger items, you can also fold down rear seats for even more space when needed.
