BMW 2 Series review

By Motor Match • 17/05/2023

The most affordable BMW coupe in recent years has been the 2 Series, now back with the new version , does it impress?

What is it?

BMW has a fantastic history when it comes to producing coupes, with these two-door models long sitting at the sportier end of this German firm’s line-up, even if you opt for ‘regular’ and non-M models.

The most affordable BMW coupe in recent years has been the 2 Series, originally called the 1 Series Coupe. Aiming to combine driving pleasure with a fun driving experience, BMW is now back with a new version, but does it impress?

What’s new?

Whereas the previous 2 Series was based on the 1 Series, this latest model is instead produced around the same underpinnings as the larger 3 Series and 4 Series – the reason being these are rear-wheel-drive cars, rather than front-driven in the 1 Series.

That said, it remains a compact model, albeit with more muscular styling than its predecessor. There are various new technologies at play here too, though it doesn’t yet ado

What’s under the bonnet?

The 2 Series is available with a good variety of engine options, though the firm has recently discontinued the only diesel model (the 220d) due to slow sales. But a wide choice of petrol engines remains, including the 220i, 230i and flagship M240i, with the latter producing a mighty 369bhp, while also adopting a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system for greater traction in poor weather.

All engines use an automatic gearbox these days too, while that rear-wheel-drive layout is a big selling point, and an increasing rarity in the shrinking coupe market.

What’s it like to drive?

Previous 2 Series models have certainly impressed behind the wheel, and we’re pleased to say that remains with this latest model. It behaves much like a 3 or 4 Series, and that’s high praise indeed.

There is excellent body control, and a great feeling of balance that makes this coupe feel engaging and involving. The slight offset is that the ride is a touch firm around town, but when cruising along, it’s very refined with minimal road and wind noise. It’s a terrific all-rounder behind the wheel.

How does it look?

BMW’s designs have been getting bolder and bolder in recent years, and the new 2 Series is no exception. It does away without the huge, controversial grilles of its larger models, but has been made to look more muscular with its boxy wheel arches and black styling.

We also love the more compact dimensions of the 2 Series, and combined with its chunky looks, helps to really make this BMW stand out.

What’s it like inside?

Jump inside the 2 Series and it’s immediately clear this is a model focused primarily on the driver, with the whole dashboard being slightly angled this way. While it doesn’t get the Curved Display screen of other newer BMWs, there’s still a large digital instrument cluster and big touchscreen, both of which remain very easy to use. The touchscreen can be controlled using a more conventional iDrive rotary controller too.

The 2 Series is not the most practical car, unsurprisingly, and though you get two rear seats, they’re not the easiest to access and there isn’t the most room back there. The 390-litre boot is a good size, however, and slightly roomier than the previous model as well.

What’s the spec like?

While previous 2 Series models could be chosen in a variety of different trim levels, BMW has now removed the ‘lesser’ grades, with this coupe now solely coming in M Sport grade, which was the best-seller anyway on previous models.

There’s plenty of equipment included, such as the digital displays, automatic air conditioning and a smart M sport styling back. The options list is quite extensive, however, and we’d be careful with choosing too many features as otherwise the price quickly ramps up.

Verdict

BMW has made yet another excellent coupe with the 2 Series, and continues this brand’s glowing history when it comes to producing sporting models. Even with a regular engine, this coupe drives with poise and agility which is quite rare to find these days.

With a stunning interior to go with it, the 2 Series feels like a more traditional BMW model with its less shouty styling. We love it for that.
