Mazda CX-5 review

By Motor Match • 03/01/2024

The CX-5 has been an important part of Mazda’s line-up for more than a decade, and even if it’s now a little older than many of its rivals, it still has plenty to offer.

What is it?

SUVs now make up two-thirds of Mazda’s sales, and the majority of those are for the mid-size CX-5. To try and keep it competitive, the Japanese firm has introduced a range of changes for the latest version, but what’s it like?

What’s new?

Though Mazda describes the latest 2022 car as a ‘significant update’, visually not a huge amount seems to have changed compared to the previous version, other than some new lights and different styling to separate the trim levels. These additional trim levels include a more rugged-looking Newground trim, as well as a Sport Black version bringing a more aggressive design.

What’s under the bonnet?

The CX-5 remains fairly traditional in the engine department, with a choice of regular petrol and diesel options. Starting with petrol, there’s a 163bhp 2.0-litre petrol available with either a six-speed manual or automatic, while if you want a bit of extra poke, there’s also a 191bhp 2.5-litre model. Neither are particularly fast or efficient, however.

The best version of the CX-5 is the diesel – a 181bhp 2.2-litre unit that’s available in a variety of configurations – such as manual and automatic, and also front- or all-wheel-drive. With a 0-60mph time of nine seconds and a claimed fuel economy figure of up to 50.4mpg, it’s an appealing option.

What’s it like to drive?

Family crossovers aren’t known for being great to drive, but the CX-5 is a real exception to that rule as if you want a fun SUV to drive, this Mazda is ideal.

It feels nimble and agile, with well-weighted steering ideal for more open roads, though this isn’t such a positive trait if all your driving is around town. The diesel also doesn’t have the gruffness that some engines of this fuel type tend to have, being both very quiet and refined on the move. Though the lack of hybrid version makes it seem a bit behind the times, if you’re happy with petrol or diesel for now, it’s a great choice.

How does it look?

Mazda has been fairly conservative with the styling changes made to the CX-5 over the years, but this remains a fresh-looking SUV. Small changes include new LED headlights with a twin signature that’s repeated at the rear.

A great selection of colour and strong variation between the different trim levels means there are plenty of versions depending on your tastes – from more rugged looks to something sportier.

What’s it like inside?

The CX-5’s interior might not look as cutting-edge as some rivals, but in many respects, this works in its favour. Mazda’s ergonomics are top-notch and the CX-5 is no different, with easily-adjustable controls and clear displays. The main screen is controlled by a rotary controller, which is quite different to the modern trend for touchscreens, but again, makes it much easier to use on the move.

The CX-5 isn’t the most spacious car in its class, though, and it doesn’t have the most rear-seat space for adults, especially if there’s someone taller in the front. At 506 litres, the boot is a good size though.

What’s the spec like?

All CX-5s come with plenty of equipment, with the entry-level Centre-Line trim still featuring dual-zone climate control, a 10.25-inch central display, front and rear parking sensors and a wide range of driver assistance features. The Newground model brings 19-inch alloy wheels and heated front seats.

An Exclusive-Line model adds leather seats, an electric boot and reversing camera. The Homura trim gains a Bose sound system and wireless smartphone charging, while the flagship Takumi trim boasts brown Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and a 360-degree camera system.

Verdict

The Mazda CX-5 might feel like a slightly conventional SUV these days, with no fancy touch displays or advanced electric powertrains.

But in many respects that works to its advantage if you’re not bothered by those things. The CX-5 is an SUV that’s great to drive, stylish to look at and also has a very well-finished interior.
