'Travelling with pets? The untold secrets to safer and hassle-free journeys

By Motor Match • 11/10/2023

Your car is never just a vehicle, it’s an extension of yourself. It’s your work horse, your daily commuter, your shopping bag holder - it might even be the one place where you enjoy a bit of alone time.

For many in the UK, though, our car rides are often - by choice or not - accompanied by our pets. In fact, according to Dogs Trust, 44% of UK dog owners drive with their dog in tow.

Whether heading to the vet, embarking somewhere cross country, or just taking a leisurely drive, you want to make sure that your pet is as safe as possible, whilst making sure that they don’t distract you from the road.

So, the various fur-mums and dads over at Motor Match put their heads together and shared the tips and tricks they use to ensure a hassle-free car ride with their pets every single time.

Choosing the right vehicle

Speak to any pet-owning driver and they’ll tell you that the key to co-piloting your pet is a vehicle that creates a safe, comfortable, practical environment. Horsepower, fuel efficiency, and aesthetics are always great “nice-to-haves”, but for those with pets, there are some essentials to consider first.

Size and entrance accessibility

Space isn’t just a luxury when it comes to travelling with pets. Just as people need room to stretch out and get comfortable during long journeys, so do our pets. A cramped space or low roof can lead to discomfort and stress for your pet, especially large dog breeds who need to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Similarly, ground to seat clearance is a must for pets as they get older and need to jump into the back or the boot, and need some help getting up.

Safety features

Like any other passenger, human or not, safety is crucial, and handy safety features can be the difference between a more relaxed driving experience, and one that is marred by anxiety of your pet’s welfare.

Child safety locks, for example, can prevent curious paws from accidentally opening doors, in the same way that window controls can prevent a stray push of a window button.

Easy cleaning

Let’s face it: pets are surprisingly messy. Be it shedding fur, muddy paws, or even the occasional accident, keeping your car clean with a pet can pose a challenge. If you can, try to find seats made of easy-to-clean materials that resist stains and odours. On the note of accidents, have some toilet break routes planned along your journey!

Get yourself some washable floor mats to deal with unexpected messes, and finding a vehicle with ample storage (e.g. spacious boot) will even allow you to stow away any cleaning supplies for on-the-go touch ups.

Pet-proofing your car

As pleasant as sharing the open road with your pet can be, it also comes with its own set of challenges. Just as you would child-proof a home, pet-proofing your car will ensure the safety and convenience of everyone involved.

Barriers and harnesses

Just as seat belts are vital for human passengers, barriers and harnesses are pivotal in ensuring your pet’s safety. In the event of sudden stops or accidents, unrestrained pets can risk injury to themselves and others, but can also be a distraction if left to roam free, further leading to a potentially dangerous driving situation.

Remember that Dogs Trust study we mentioned earlier? Well that same study revealed that 1 in 5 dog owners actually travel with their dog unrestrained.

What’s worse, 10% place their dog in their lap, another 10% take their hand off the wheel to restrain a pet, and a shocking 5% even take selfies and play with their dog whilst at the wheel!

When it comes to restraining your pet, it isn’t just a gentle suggestion.

According to The Highway Code itself, “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.”

Similarly, Rule 144 of The Highway Code says that not properly restraining your dog falls under “driving without due care and attention”, something which can attract:

  • 3-9 points on your licence
  • A fine of up to £2,500
  • Driving disqualification, under extreme cases
  • Comfortable bedding

Long trips can be tiring for our pets, give them a comfortable spot to rest to make it all a little more pleasant for them.

Travel beds, for example, are specially designed to allow your pet to snuggle in comfortably. Blankets with familiar scents can be especially comforting, making them feel at home in the car.

Packing the essentials

It’s not just about comfort and safety, though. When you’re on the move, it’s easy to forget that our pets have basic needs just like we do. Especially on longer journeys, hydration and nutrition are important.

Always be sure to bring a portable water bowl and enough fresh water for your pet if you know you’re going to be on the road for a long time. If your dog is an anxious passenger - and is panting a lot - they will quickly become thirsty.

Distract and entertain

A bored pet can also become a restless and disruptive travel companion, so keeping them entertained can make the journey smoother for everyone involved.

Bring along their favourite toys from home to invite a sense of normalcy and comfort to the less familiar environment of the car. For longer periods, try a more interactive toy to keep them mentally challenged and occupied.

Hit the road

When we have our pets alongside us in the car, the tales of the open road become that much more special, but only when everyone is safe and comfortable. By prioritising this for our pets, we not only ensure a smoother journey for them, but also for ourselves. After all, a relaxed pet makes a relaxed driver.

We believe every journey, no matter how long or short, should be cherished. So, next time you hit the road with your pet, remember these tips and enjoy the ride.
