Buying a Medium Sized Van

Medium vans are very much the workhorse of the modern economy, ferrying people and their goods to and fro along the nation’s major arterial routes. Finding the right one for you, though, can be a challenge. While there are a lot of choices out there, knowing which particular model to select for your needs is never as straightforward as you imagine.

Types of Medium Used Vans

Medium vans sit somewhere between the small city vans and their larger, bulkier counterparts where the roof extends beyond the cabin. Medium vans offer ample space but are still quite easy to manoeuvre around city streets and have decent aerodynamics for those long motorway miles. The average second-hand medium used van offers approximately 10,000 litres of interior storage space.

Panel medium used vans

These vans, as you might imagine, fully enclose the loadspace with metal chassis panelling. While some models have a window section at the side, most avoid this for security reasons. Panel vans, therefore, are ideal for people who need to keep valuable tools and stock safe.

Minibuses

Some manufacturers use the same medium-sized van template to build minibuses, adding windows to the side and rear of the loadspace. Most minibuses transport between nine and seventeen people. They are ideal for companies and individuals who need to regularly transport large groups of people from one location to another.

Box vans

The loadspace on box vans typically extends beyond the cabin in a boxy shape, providing more space for bulky items. While you can find medium used vans for sale with a boxy appearance, it is relatively rare. Box vans are a bit like panel vans but have a sizeable cube-shaped loadspace that makes carrying bulky items hassle-free. Usually, the chassis on box vans sticks out a little from the cab in which the driver sits.

Tipper vans

These workhorse vans use a hydraulic ram that tilts the trailer backwards, allowing the driver to jettison the load.

Choosing a Medium Sized Van

If you’re looking for medium used vans for sale, there are numerous options available to you. Take the Volkswagen Transporter, for instance. It has been on the road for more than 65 years, having made its debut in the 1950s. Many used models of the vehicle feature its DSG automatic transmission and Euro6-compliant engine technology.

The Ford Transit is another favourite, having served millions of tradespeople around the world for decades. The base price of the vehicle has always been highly affordable, and the mileage is surprisingly generous too, at between 40 and 50, depending on which model you purchase.

Vauxhall has also made significant contributions to the medium used van market with their Vivaro, one of the most popular vans of its class on the road. While the loadspace might not be quite as large as that of the VW or Ford, it still offers upwards of 6,600 litres of space and will do between 40 and 47 mpg.

Why A Medium Van Might Be Right For You

While there are thousands of quality medium used vans for sale on the market, knowing whether one is right for you is not always clear. Medium vans are for people who need to transport a considerable amount of building supplies, stock or large tools.

Most medium used vans use diesel as the power source. It tends to offer the best mix between efficiency and performance in the majority of driving settings. Even though most medium-sized vans are not based on car chassis, manufacturers have worked hard to ensure that they handle more like regular cars than ever before. Most of the time, you don’t know you’re driving a van. It feels more like a car.

Medium-sized used vans have a high level of commonality between different makes. Peugeot and Citroen, for instance, have both teamed up with Toyota to make their vans, as has Vauxhall. Renault vans are also very similar to those made by Nissan and Fiat. So if you like the feel of one particular van, then there’s a good chance that you’ll enjoy the others.
