The Evolution of the Volkswagen Transporter
The Volkswagen Transporter has now been in production for a nearly record-breaking 70 years, and it is still as popular now as it was when it launched all of those years ago. Production began on the T1 back in 1950, and it was made as an 8-seater passenger van. It used the same engine and gearbox as the popular Beetle, and over 30 versions were created (some by outside companies), including mobile shop, ice cream van and tipper-truck variants.
The T2 launched in 1967 with a new bay window to replace the previous incarnation's split-screen window, and a sliding side door was also fitted as standard. The wider-bodied T3 arrived in 1983, but the biggest change to the VW Transporter came in 1990 with the T4, which was released in a variety of styles with a newly designed front engine and added front-wheel drive. Loadspace was also increased and there was now the inclusion of two sliding side doors.
The T5 launched in 2003, with an upgraded exterior design, a roomier interior, and a choice of three roof heights. The T6, which is the most recent iteration of the VW Transporter, was launched in 2015. It is quite similar to the T5, though it did receive a facelift in 2019, with a revised interior, improvements to fuel efficiency, increased connectivity, and a new type of power steering.
Though the VW Transporter may have started its life with more of a campervan look, it now boasts focus on suspension and engine power, aiming for the size available to a van with the driving feel of a car. The most recent update to the VW Transporter, the Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 has a greater focus on user accessibility, with its new infotainment system expanding further than ever before.

Buying a Used Volkswagen Transporter

The Transporter itself is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, and there are 83bhp, 102bhp, 148bhp outputs available with a single turbocharged engine, or a 201bhp output with twin turbos. Petrol engine variants are also offered, with outputs of 148bhp and 204bhp.
Several trim levels are available, beginning with the Startline, and followed by Trendline, Highline, and Sportline. There is also the Transporter Shuttle and the Transporter Caravelle, both of which can seat up to nine people, and these are available in their own trim lines, ranging from entry-level S right up the more feature-heavy SE and Executive.
The Startline gives you many of the features would expect from a modern-day van, including Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and a 5-inch dashboard display. If you opt for the Trendline, you get added armrests in the front and body-coloured bumpers and doors for a little extra style. The Highline model includes alloy wheels, as well as improved air conditioning, a heated windscreen and a leather multi-functional steering wheel.
The Shuttle and Caravelle models are for those people who want a taste of luxury, with quilted leather seats and, if you opt for the SE or Executive model, upgraded upholstery, floor carpets, and deluxe headlining.
