First released in 2012, the Volkswagen up! was one of the best ultra-compact city cars on the market, and so was a big hit with urban dwellers looking to drive around town in something stylish.

History of the Volkswagen up!

When it first hit UK showrooms in March 2012, the Volkswagen up! arrived in three-door form only. It had a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and offered either 60hp or 75hp. All models had a five-speed manual gearbox, although five-speed automatic models arrived in August 2012. Five-door versions of the up! also arrived at this time.

With Volkswagen’s patented BlueMotion technology, these early versions of the up! were celebrated for their efficient fuel consumption, with both engine sizes putting out less than 100 grams of CO2.

At launch, black and white special edition models were available, with alloy wheels and a range of colour schemes. 'Rock up!' and Groove up!' specials hit the market in July 2013 with upgraded stereos, and in January 2014, the Electric E-up! followed.

The up! was given an upgrade in August 2016, and once again, buyers could opt for 3 or 5-door models. The new versions had redesigned body panels, LED daytime running lights, new exterior and interior colours, and a new infotainment system. The 1.0 turbocharged engine included in all 2016 trims increased efficiency.

Which Volkswagen up! Is Right For You?

You have a wide variety to choose from if you opt for a used Volkswagen up! and all are powered by 3-cylinder engines.

The entry-level trim, simply known as 'up!,' comes in 3 and 5-door guises, with LED daytime running lights, electric front windows, manual air conditioning, and hill-start assistance. You get a small colour screen with the relevant dashboard information and Bluetooth connectivity. If you opt for the Black or White trims, you get 16in alloy wheels, tinted windows, and a park-assisted camera. You have a choice of 3 or 5-door models.

The upgraded 5-door up! Beats trim adds ambient interior lighting, a multifunction steering system, and the Beats audio system. The hot-hatch up! GTI is the more powerful model, with 3 doors, a 113bhp engine, 17-inch alloys, and heated sports seats. Navigation and park assist systems are fitted as standard, and there are a range of customisable extras.

Prices for the Volkswagen up! will vary according to the specification, age, and mileage history. 3-door models seem to be more plentiful than the 5-door models, but whichever you buy, you are guaranteed a reliable and robust car for your money.
